Canadian Black Bear Hunts: Bear hunting in Canada is an activity enjoyed by hunters from all over the world.

Sunset Country tourist region with it's thousands of acres of boreal forest, rich in berries, roots and other natural foods consumed by these large animals, along with excellent populations of the smaller mammals that bears eat, has everything to support a healthy bear population. Big males can weigh more than 500 pounds.

This rugged terrain makes for some of the finest in bow hunting. We have a 92% success rate on bear kills with our baited stands. Fall bear hunts are offered at our outpost cabins. Available are a fly-in hunt or a drive-to. Included in the drive-to, are your accommodations, license, bait and active baits. Included in the fly-in are your accommodations, flight to and from the secluded outpost, boat & motor, gas and bait. Discounts are available on boat rentals for hunters who stay at the resort.

Northwestern Ontario Black Bear Hunting

We are proud to boast a 92% kill ratio for the past six years. You will find at Sioux Lookout that bears are plentiful. Skinning and guiding are optional. Our two Bear Management Areas cover approximately 280 square kilometers north of Sioux Lookout in northwestern Ontario. Northumbrian Resort offers a bear package, which includes hunting license, cabin and active baits.

Baits are set 3 weeks ahead of guests arriving - guiding and skinning are optional. Our hunters are given an average of three active baits per person and are advised as to which baits are attracting the largest bears.

Safty First When Black Bear Hunting in Ontario

The objective of the hunter orange regulation is to maximize hunter safety without negatively impacting hunting success.

Under this regulation, all licensed hunters, including archery hunters hunting during the gun season for deer and moose, are required to wear hunter orange. As well, all black bear hunters hunting during the black bear season are required to wear hunter orange except when in a tree stand. (This exception is in place because, unlike deer and moose, black bears have colour vision.) Waterfowl hunters, wild turkey hunters and archery hunters in archery-only areas are exempt from the hunter orange requirement.

A hunter orange garment and head cover must be worn. The hunter orange garment must cover a minimum of 400 square inches (2,580 square cm) above the waist and be visible from all sides. Open mesh or camouflage hunter orange must not be part of the 400 square inches. A hunting coat or vest generally meets this requirement. The hunter orange head cover may have: open mesh; a peak or brim colour other than hunter orange; a crest or logo which does not completely cover the hunter orange on the side where it is affixed. The head cover may not contain camouflage material.
